How to choose your first vibrator

By The nawtyshop team · · 2 min read

The short answer

Start small, soft and external. A compact, rechargeable, body-safe silicone vibrator with a few gentle settings is the easiest first choice. You can always go bigger or stronger later, but a toy that overwhelms you on day one tends to end up in a drawer.

Start with where you want to feel it

Most first-timers enjoy external stimulation most, so a toy designed for the outside of the body is the easiest place to begin. Bullet and palm-sized vibrators are small, unintimidating and easy to hold. Wands are larger and more powerful, and are often loved by people who already know they like strong sensations.

If you are curious about internal play, look for a slim, smooth shape with a gentle curve. You do not need anything large to find out what you like.

Choose a body-safe material

Your first toy should be made from a material that is non-porous and easy to clean:

  • Body-safe silicone is soft, warm to the touch and easy to keep clean. It is the best all-round choice.
  • ABS plastic is hard and smooth. It carries vibration well and is very easy to clean.

Look for products where the material is clearly stated. On our product pages, Material verified means we have seen supplier documents for it.

Think about power and settings

More power is not always better. A first vibrator with a gentle low setting and a few steps up gives you room to explore. Too many patterns can be confusing, so three to five settings is plenty.

Rechargeable toys are convenient and usually more powerful than battery ones. Battery toys are cheaper and easy to travel with.

Check the practical details

  • Noise: if you share walls, look for toys described as quiet.
  • Waterproofing: waterproof toys can be rinsed under the tap and used in the bath. Splash-proof toys can only be wiped.
  • Size: smaller toys are easier to hold and to store discreetly.
  • Controls: simple buttons you can find without looking make things far more relaxing.

Your first time with it

Take it slowly. Start on the lowest setting, over underwear or with a little water-based lube, and see what feels good. There is no goal and no right way to do it. Clean it before and after you use it, and let it dry before you put it away.

If anything feels sore or irritated, stop and give your body a break.

Questions people ask

Is it normal to feel nervous about buying a first vibrator?

Completely. Most people feel a little shy the first time. A vibrator is simply a tool for getting to know what you enjoy, and there is no right or wrong way to feel about it.

Will a vibrator make me less sensitive?

There is no good evidence that vibrators cause lasting loss of sensitivity. If things feel a little numb after a long session, it passes. Lower settings and short breaks help.

Can I use a vibrator with a partner?

Yes. Small, quiet external vibrators are easy to bring into partnered play, and many couples find they add to the experience rather than replacing anything.
