How to clean and store your toys

By The nawtyshop team · · 1 min read

The short answer

Wash your toy before and after every use with warm water and a mild, unscented soap or a toy cleaner. Rinse it, let it dry completely in the air, then store it in a clean cotton pouch away from other toys. Keep water away from charging points unless the toy is fully waterproof.

Clean before and after every use

A quick wash before you start removes dust from storage. A thorough wash after keeps bacteria from building up. It takes a minute and makes your toys last much longer.

  1. Wipe or rinse the toy with warm water.
  2. Wash it with a mild, unscented soap or a toy cleaner, paying attention to seams and textured areas.
  3. Rinse well, so no soap is left behind.
  4. Pat dry with a clean, lint-free towel and let it air-dry completely.

Care by material

  • Silicone: warm water and mild soap. Avoid silicone lube, which can damage the surface.
  • ABS plastic: warm water and mild soap. Very easy to keep clean.
  • Glass and stainless steel: warm water and soap. Check for chips before each use, and never use a chipped glass toy.
  • Lingerie: hand-wash in cool water with a gentle detergent and dry flat, away from direct sun.

Waterproof, splash-proof and rechargeable

Waterproof toys can be rinsed under the tap. Splash-proof toys should only be wiped with a damp cloth and soap, then wiped clean. Either way, keep charging points dry, and never charge a toy while it is wet.

Storing your toys

  • Store toys only once they are completely dry.
  • Keep each one in its own clean cotton pouch, or in the box it came in. Some materials react when they touch for a long time.
  • Keep them out of direct sunlight and away from heat.
  • Take batteries out of battery-powered toys you will not use for a while.

When to let a toy go

Retire a toy if its surface becomes sticky, cracked or cloudy, if it smells after cleaning, or if a rechargeable toy gets hot or swells. Recycle rechargeable toys and batteries at an e-waste point rather than putting them in the bin.

Questions people ask

Can I put my toys in the dishwasher?

Only if the maker's instructions say so. Most toys with motors or batteries must never go in a dishwasher, and the heat can damage many materials.

How often should I replace a toy?

Replace a toy if its surface becomes sticky, cracked, cloudy or rough, or if it smells even after cleaning. Damaged surfaces are harder to keep clean.

Can I share a toy with a partner?

Yes, as long as you wash it thoroughly between people or use a fresh condom on it for each person.
